Do scores in school matter?
The common topic during lunch sessions is normally a flashback of childhood days. Just that the sub-topic keeps on changing ranging from pranks played in schools, excuses made for not going to school, playing in general, comics, festival craze, old black and white TVs and few options on the only channel but still cherishing them to what not. Those were the days!! Anyways coming back to present, today’s post lunch conversation, somehow brought back the memories of my school mates and raised a big question in my mind that where are all of them today professionally. Then percentage, rank used to matter a lot. It would not be exaggeration to state that intelligence was directly linked to percentage scored. Though me was never a part of the same and so always considered myself average. So many years down the line, today if I see and compare few of my classmates, I can firmly say that academic scores are no way indicative of a good or bright career. Nature vs Nurture debate also doesn’t hold true in this context so what can it be contributed to? Some argue that its exposure after school days and later, which decides how your professional career will shape up but my eccentric mind wonder is it something that people call destiny? Ah may be I found a topic for a later post.

well not bad for a first timer....its as simple as this good precentage does not mean a child is bright...jus like lot of money doesnt mean a person is happy...hisotry says it all..newton..einstein..edison...n ofcourse me...do i say nymore.. :))

In a way... yes... it does. It forms the basis on which you get admitted to the primier educational institutes of the country and abroad and that definitley leads the path to the kind of jobs that you get selected for starting from the very fact that what kind of organisations deem your institute to be fit for conducting campus interviews. This shapes your entire future.
In a way no..... a person of character, guts and spine can do and acheive a lot in life and does not require the good percentage to be termed as successful. It all depends on what values he/she has picked up for himself/herself from peers, colleagues, friends... but definitely he would have to fight for it.
So good education->good marks->premier institute->good job...... makes the life of a person with a lot of attitude, guts and spine a lot easier and he is able to soar higher and fulfil his dreams...
But viewpoints differ from person to person.... even i was an average student at best... and i have struggled quite a bit to reach where i am today.. and i often think where would i have been if i had paid attention and got good marks as well.... but that is all conjecture.... and i dont want others to face what i have faced....
As i said each to his own...

Ofcourse its not just scores but a combination of many more factors that decides the outcome. However my thought was a simple one that not just scores but the way those scores are scored is what ultimately matter.

I think being a bookworm cannot ensure your professional success. Big names does not mean you are productive. Your capabilities can not be evaluated based on which school you are from.

First, being an average student my self, I would tend to agree, but then, let us look at the issue in detail.
I do not remember the author, but someone had said “success is mental template that once achieved is easily replicated”, a closer look at the statement reveals why pedigree matters a lot of times, it is not about raw IQ to that extent but others like self discipline, knowing the basics of keeping the goal in mind and working towards it, managing the pebbles first before the sand and stuff like that, so if they have got it right early , there is a high probability that they will be able to do it again.

Scores in school does matter sometimes..... Scores shud not only be good in academics, but also in extracurricular activities. I mean to say if a child is smart enough, & also good in activities of his interest, then he can make out of any situation.
Academic scores in school helps in getting higher education dreams fulfilled. or may be some good job requires throught out good academic percentage.
One should know to implement his knowledge wisely. he can obviously overcome his shortage of percantages.
Average students not get so good marks in their schools. But there's always possibility to showcase oneself through his general intelligence (& practical knowledge).
